Poverty-stricken mother hands over newborn boy to another man

Dhenkanal: A woman in Odisha's Dhenkanal district handed over her newborn son to another man expressing her inability to upbring the child up due to abject poverty.

The incident was reported from Kankadahad Rupabedha village. The woman, Damayanti, wife of Bhushan Patra, had delivered a baby boy on May 9. However, citing poverty Damayanti gave away her newborn to a man from Patabeda village.

"As I am not capable of fulfilling the basic needs of my child, I have handed him over to another person," Damayanti said.

Kankadahad Block Development Officer (BDO), Jyoti Shankar Sahu said that an investigation will be carried out into the matter.

"The woman is receiving rice under PDS (Public Distribution System) scheme every month and there are other schemes as well. It's unclear why she chose to give away her baby to someone else. I have asked the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) to get more details," said Sahu.
