Gajapati: Driven by abject poverty, an elderly couple attempted to commit suicide at Lingipur of Goshani here on Monday night.

V. Santaya (65) with his wife V. Waralaxmi (60) allegedly consumed pesticides after leaving a suicide note in Telugu which read that “No one is responsible for our death” and “Financial conditions not well”.

The two were rushed in to the district headquarters hospital by some of the villagers where Santaya breathed his last and Waralaxmi is still fighting for life.

Neighbours of the duo said that their financial condition was very bad and that might have forced them to take the extreme step.

“We were told by the doctors that they have consumed pesticides which lead to one’s death and another struggling for her life”, said a relative of the couple.

When asked about any financial aid to the victims, the local BDO said that the couple were availing Rs 200 per month under the Madhusudan Pension scheme of the state government which was not sufficient for them to make a living out of it.

The couple is survived by one son and three daughters. And the son works outside the state as a Dadan labour.
