Berhampur: A day after adding former Congress legislator Ramesh Jena’s name to a tender fixing case in Aska, the town police has sought his remand in connection with the murder of Srinibas Rath, the sarpanch of Maulabhanj in the district.

The Crime Branch of Odisha police has appealed before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court for a seven-day remand of Jena. Police suspect Jena had hatched a plot to eliminate Rath to settle personal scores. Police too suspect the former Sanakhemundi legislator had a previous enmity with Rath, who was killed in 2012.

Though police has arrested five persons in connection with the case, Jena’s involvement in the crime is suspected. The police has added Jena’s name as one of the accused in the case.

The court is expected to hear the remand plea of the police tomorrow.
