Bhubaneswar: The process of formation of Vidhan Parishad (legislative council) in Odisha moved a step further on Monday with the study panel formed by the State government held its first meeting and decided to set out on a three-day visit to Maharashtra and Karnataka on January 31.

Informing mediaperosns about the decision, committee chairman Nrushinga Sahu said the purpose of the tour will be to study the functioning of such councils in both the States and collect related data.

The panel will continue with its work even without BJP and Congress representatives, Sahu added.

The State government had formed the committee with Nrushinga Sahu, Pramila Mallik, Manohar Randhari (all BJD), Bhujabal Majhi of Congress and Nitesh Gangdev of BJP as its members to study pros and cons of setting up of the council in Odisha.

However, both the opposition parties rejected the idea of the government and denied to be part of the committee.
