Balasore: Closely on the heels of the Bhubaneswar incident 10 days ago, the women of Saragaon village under Sadar police limits here ransacked and torched a liquor shop near the village yesterday. Besides, the women resorted to road blockade demanding removal of the shop.
According to an agitating woman, a villager Khetra Mohan Sahu was killed as a drunken bike driver hit him on Tuesday. The ransacking of the liquor shop was a consequence of the death as the villagers blame the existence of the shop behind many such nuisances in the past, she added.
Further, the irate women have warned that the agitation will be intensified in the coming days, if the shop is not removed from the village.
In the Bhubaneswar incident, over a hundred women had demolished a country-made liquor shop in Pandera area under Mancheswar police limits on the outskirts of the city. The women from neighbouring areas armed with lathis and brooms destroyed all the wine bottles kept inside the shop.
The women were so disgusted with free flow of liquor there that they even climbed atop the shop and broke its asbestos roof and grills into pieces. “We were forced to do this as the administration didn’t pay heed to our plea for closing down or shifting the shop elsewhere,” one of the women had said.
