Bhubaneswar: In a shocking incident, a woman died inside the car she was driving in front of the Utkal University here on Saturday evening during a road blockade of the varsity’s students in protest against the university PG Council’s decision not to hold students’ union polls this year.
Reports said the deceased, identified as Suman, a native of Jamshedpur and working as a teacher in a private school, was on the way to her house when the car, which she was driving, got stuck on the National Highway in front of Utkal University as the irate students blocked the road in protest against the cancellation of students’ union elections by the university authorities.
Eyewitnesses said the lady teacher suddenly fell unconscious. At this, the police, which was deployed in the area following the students’ agitation, brought her out of the car by breaking open the door glass of the car and rushed her to Capital Hospital where she was declared dead by the doctors.
The body was later taken to the hospital morgue where the post mortem would be conducted tomorrow.
While the exact cause of the death is not yet known, Bhubaneswar DCP Satyabrata Bhoi said the woman might have died of shock after some striking students rushed towards her vehicle.
The family members of the deceased are expected to arrive here later in the day, sources said.
Meanwhile, the irate university students withdrew the road blockade following the intervention of the DCP.
