Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government today submitted affidavits in Supreme Court on the actions taken by the State over the case relating to circulation of rape videos on social networking sites.
“No lawyer on behalf of Odisha could appear on the previous date fixed by the Supreme Court. So, direction was issued to appear personally today. An affidavit on the actions taken by the State government on rape video case has been submitted”, chief secretary Gokul Chandra Pati said after appearing before the court.
The apex court had summoned the top bureaucrat to appear on March 20, but he failed to keep the date. Expressing anguish over it, the court had slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on the State.
The State government has so far not presented its submissions in the court over the issue. The case came up after the court took suo motu cognizance of a letter sent to it by the Hyderabad-based social organization ‘Prajwala’ and converted it into a petition.
The letter alleged that neither the Centre nor the concerned State governments have taken any step to prevent the spread of such porn videos in the social sites like WhatsApp, Facebook and YouTube.
The court has asked the CBI to investigate into the matter, acting upon which the Central probe agency arrested Bhubaneswar-based builder Subrat Sahoo alias Kalia and his associate Banti in one such case.
Meanwhile after the CBI arrested two persons in the VSS Nagar MMS scandal for allegedly circulating sex videos on social media platforms, the Crime Branch of Odisha police have registered at least five cases recently taking suomotu cognisance of such cases being reported from various places in the state.
Cases of sex videos circulating through mobile phones and other social media platforms have come to the notice of the Crime Branch in at least five cities in Odisha.
Taking suomotucognisance of the cases, the sleuths have registered cases against unnamed persons.
