Nabarangpur: Farmer suicide cases continue unabated with three more farmers ending lives due to alleged crop loss and debt burden in Nabarangpur and Dhenkanal districts on Friday.
In Nabarangpur, both the deceased were identified as Baladev Gond of Nangaguda near Umerkote and Chaituram Gond of Mauradehi near Raigarh.
Sources said, Baldev went missing since October 18 and his body was found hanging today from a tree near a river. His family members said he had borrowed some amounts from private money lenders for agriculture. But due to crop failure he was under severe mental stress. Unable to bear the burden he might have taken the extreme step, they added.
Similarly, Chaituram, who had grown paddy and ragi in his lands after taking loans from nearest bank, was going through mental burden as scanty rainfalls battered the hopes of bumper harvest, his family members said.
Meanwhile, local MLA staged a dharna with the body of Chaituram demanding Rs 10 lakh compensation for deceased family and the government to declare Raigarh as complete drought-hit.
The MLA and his followers threatened not to allow the body for post mortem until their demands are met.
In Dhenkanal, a farmer identified as Prasanna Jena of Uasadiha village under Nadiaali panchayat died at the Athagarh sub-divisional hospital where he was undergoing treatment after consuming poison.
