Berhampur: In a tragic incident, seven persons including a woman were killed and five sustained critical injuries when a speeding truck hit a mini-truck and a bus near Randha squre in Ganjam district on Thursday morning.
According to sources, the mishap took place when vegetables were being unloaded from the mini-truck and goods procured from a nearby wholesale market were loaded onto a bus. Another speeding truck suddenly hit both the static vehicles causing the deaths.
The bus was meant to head towards Berhampur on NH-16, Superintendent of Police (Berhampur), Sarthak Sarangi said.
While six persons died on the spot, another succumbed to injuries in hospital. The injured were admitted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here and their condition was stated to be critical, Sarangi added.
According to sources, the deceased included four vegetable retailers waiting near the static vehicles, driver of the truck and helper and conductor of the bus who were engaged in loading the vegetables.
Ganjam Collector Prem Chandra Chaudhary has announced financial assistance to the families of the deceased, the sources added.
