Cuttack: Children of Odisha seem to be unsafe these days looking at the physical and mental torture inflicted on a seven-year-old girl in Cuttack by her cousin in presence of her mother.
Neighbours of the accused mother said the minor girl was used to be beaten up by the cousin as well as the lady.
Adding to the horror, the victim has confided to one of the neighbours that her cousin had forced her to undress in presence of her mother.
“The girl said her cousin asked her to undress. When she resisted, the youth thrashed her,” said Kalayani Mallick, a neighbour.
Rajalaxmi Rout, another neighbour, said she had only informed the Childline as she was worried about the kid after not finding her for three-four days.
“After the Childline team rescued, we only came to know the girl was raped and severely tortured,” Rout added.
Further, she stated, “How can the owner of the house, where the woman and her child were staying on rent, did not know about the incident when we are staying 100 meters away from here? It is nearly impossible that they did not know.”
Rout said the house owner have lent tacit support to the accused mother and tried to save her. “Even they hid the accused mother’s mobile phone,” the neighbour added.
Police have arrested the kid’s cousin and the accused mother after questioning.
Describing the incident as grossly unfortunate, Cuttack collector Nirmal Chandra Mishra said the administration will bear all the medical expenses of the girl at the SCB Medical College and Hospital.
“If the kid does not want to return home, she will be kept in a child care institution,” the collector said.
