Bhubaneswar: BJD supremo and Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday named Narendra Swain as the party’s candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-poll scheduled to be held on December 14.
Talking to mediapersons at Naveen Nivas here, Patnaik said, “I would like to announce the name of Narendra Kumar Swain, general secretary of BJD, as the party’s candidate for Rajya Sabha by-poll.”
Reacting to the BJD supremo’s announcement, Swain said, “I am grateful to the party chief for his decision.”
Swain added, “I am a honest worker of BJD. Whenever I was delegated any responsibility, I tried to complete that with sincerity. I have come from a poor farmer family. After studies, I left the lawyer profession and joined the party.”
Further, he said, “I am grateful to party supremo Naveen Patnaik for his decision and will always work for the party.”
Swain said, “As the Central government has discontinued funds for schemes in eight fields, our party wants justice. Like Bihar, the Centre should have allocated special funds to Odisha as per its demand. Like the Congress regime, the BJP government is not allocating funds to Odisha.”
As per the notification issued by the Odisha Legislative Assembly on Thursday, the process of nomination filing, which began on November 26, will continue till December 3.
Verification of papers is on December 4 and the last date of withdrawal of nominations is on December 7, the notification added.
The lone Rajya Sabha seat has fallen vacant after death of BJD’s Kalpataru Das.
