Bhubaneswar: Formal orders to rusticate five students of Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) accused of ragging juniors inside the hostel will be issued today by the University authorities. Taking stern action against the students, the disciplinary committee set up by university had yesterday informed to rusticate 5 students for one year. Moreover, the disciplinary action was also recommended against 10 other students of the university’s Forestry department where the ragging was reported.
“As per the guidelines laid out by the University Grants Commission, the actions has been taken against the students,” said OUAT Vice Chancellor Manoranjan Kar yesterday.
“We are certainly taking action against the culprits. Out of the 15 students accused, we are currently examining whether all of them are involved or not. However, 5 students have certainly been rusticated for 1 year. We are examining the evidence against the others as once the orders are issued it would have ramifications if there are certain discrepancies. We will give the accused students a chance to defend themselves and have called them tomorrow to present their case,” added Kar.
Notably, the ragging incident was brought to the notice of the Vice Chancellor by the teachers of the university after receiving complaints from the victim students.
In the mean time, the parents of the victim students filed a complaint with Khandagiri Police after which a case was registered against senior students of the university.
