Nabarangpur: In another case of brutality against infants based on superstition, a 24-day-old baby girl was branded with hot iron rod in Ghodakhunta Village of Dabugaon block in Nabarangpur district. According to sources, the infant has been admitted to the district headquarters hospital in a critical condition following the hot iron branding. The infant is currently undergoing treatment at the sick new-born care unit (SNCU).
Sources said, after the infant took ill, the family members called a quack who branded the baby with a hot iron rod.
With this fresh iron branding incident, a total of six cases have been reported in Nabarangpur district alone in the recent past.
Earlier on Tuesday, a 33-day-old girl child was branded with hot iron to cure her of some ailment by a quack at Pujariguda village under Kosagumuda block.
The infant daughter of Laxmi Harijan and Padalam Harijan was branded with the hot iron by the quack, who got a call from the infant’s grandfather, on Monday last week. When her condition deteriorated, the infant was admitted to the district hospital on Tuesday and that is when the matter came to light.
Similarly, a 22-day-old was admitted to the Koraput district hospital in a severe condition after being branded with a hot iron on January 9.
