Meet debt-ridden farmers: Naveen directs party workers

Bhubaneswar: Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday directed his MPs, MLAs and workers to visit panchayats and inform farmers about the package of assistance announced by the State government.

In a letter to the elected representatives he said, the farmers worried over crop failure and loan burden must be aware about the financial assistance announced for them.

The letter read, the Opposition is misleading the people and farmers by politicking over unfortunate deaths of farmers and dubbing each one as farmer suicide due to crop loss and loan burden.

Our government is a pro farmer government and it has always stood by the farmers during past calamities be it in 2010 or 2011, Patnaik said in his letter.

Reviews were conducted and steps taken to save crops. All possible steps were taken to assist the farmers, the letter further said. The package has been announced and loan repayment has been rescheduled while instructions have been issued that farmers would get fresh rabi crop loan, it added.

Instead of cooperating with the government to help farmers in drought hit areas, the Opposition is resorting to cheap politics over alleged farmers suicides, regretted the BJD president.

He called upon party legislators, district presidents and workers to reach out to each panchayat and farmers and explain the package of assistance to them. “Meet farmers, discuss their problems and try to resolve them. Give special attention to this and move the tehsil and local administration is helping the farmers. In case you require my intervention in resolving any problem in drought hit areas, do draw my attention,” stated Patnaik.
