Rourkela: A man was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants near Riun village on the bank of Koel river in Odisha’s Sundargarh district, officials said today.
The incident took place when the deceased, identified as Hari Kerketta (55), was returning home from market in a motor-cycle which his son was riding, they said.
As they came face to face with the herd of elephants, the son suddenly took a sharp turn in a bid to move away from the animals. The deceased apparently lost balance and fell down only to be trampled by the pachyderms, they said.
Assistant Conservator of Forest (ACF), Rourkela Jitendra Kumar Mohanty said Kerketta probably panicked and slipped from the bike when his son took a sharp turn after which he was trampled by the herd.
The ACF said an ex-gratia amount Rs 10,000 had been paid to the family immediately.
After further inquiry the family will receive compensation as per provisions, Mohanty said.
