Bhubaneswar: The body of doctor Swetapadma Mishra, who reportedly committed suicide two days back was cremated at Swargadwar in Puri in the presence of her parents and in-laws.
Mishra’s husband Arijit Mohapatra, who is also a doctor by profession, also attended the funeral ceremony.
Earlier in the day, the Commissionerate police was in a fix as to whom to hand over the body of the doctor as both her in-laws and parents were claiming for it for solemnizing last rites.
After legal consultation, the police handed over Mishra’s body to her parents.
Soon after Mishra’s death news spread, family members of Swetapadma, a gynaecologist, alleged that their daughter was tortured for dowry and forced to commit suicide.
“She was being tortured mentally. My daughter used to say she has to tolerate everything for her son. She had cleared UPSC and OPSC, but her husband asked her to work at Hi-Tech hospital. Recently, she asked me for Rs 80 lakh for setting up a nursing home and to purchase land. I have brought allegations against her father-in-law, mother-in-law and husband. They should be punished and sent to jail” Snehalata Mishra, mother of Swetapadma said.
However, husband of Swetapadma had rejected the charge for her death.
“She was under treatment for schizophrenia. I have all the documents regarding this” Mohapatra said.
