Koraput: BJD, Cong stage separate dharna over farmers’ issue
Jeypore: Politics hot up in Koraput district over the pending dues of the farmers who are yet to get the remaining amount of their Rabi crop procured on June 30.
Ruling BJD and Opposition Congress staged protest on Tuesday in front of the office of sub-collector.
BJD spokesperson and former minister Ravi Narayan Nanda and Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati staged separate sit-in with their followers and farmers. Both the leaders threatened to continue the stir until problems of the farmers are solved.
Sources said around 1000 farmers in the district sold their paddy weighing around 72,000 quintal to government during season on June 30. Even though four months have elapsed since that time, the peasants are yet to get their pending dues, they alleged.
The farmers said they had met the millers, sub-collector, collector and food civil supplies secretary and minister for their dues, but in vain.
Koraput Farmers’ Association on Monday decided not to co-operate the kharif paddy procurement process beginning November 15.
Ravi Nanda on Monday said that government wrote to the collector for disbursement of pending money to farmers. However, the Collector did not oblige government order.
