Bhubaneswar: Coming down heavily on the BJD government over drought report and farmer suicide cases, Opposition Congress and BJP on Friday demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation for the families of the ryots committed suicide recently.
The Congress alleged that report prepared by the government over drought is misleading. “We demand Rs 20,000 per hectare compensation to the farmers in drought-affected areas. Besides, we demand disbursal of loans to the farmers at zero or 1 per cent interest rate,” PCC president Prasad Harichandan said at a press meet here. The party’s another demand is to pay Rs 10 lakh compensation to the family of the farmers who ended their lives due to crop loss, he added.
The BJP too backed the Congress party over the drought situation and farmer suicide cases. At a media conference, senior leader Biswa Bhushan Harichandan said the government should immediately disburse Rs 10 lakh from the chief minister relief funds as compensation to the family of the farmers who killed selves.
“There is no need to express sympathy as Agriculture minister said to visit the victim farmers’ family and inquired on the ground. The government should compensate the family of the farmers by paying Rs 10 lakh from the chief minister relief fund”, Biswabhushan said.
“Seeds, fertilizers and loans should be provided for Rabi crop. Loans of the farmers should be waived”, he demanded at the press conference.
On the other hand, BJD also countered the opposition. “Measures have been taken on war footing. Odisha State Cooperative Marketing Federation Ltd. (MARKFED) has been asked to buy fertilizers for which corpus fund of Rs 100 crore has been made. Steps have been taken for fresh loans for farmers”, BJD spokesperson Sashi Bhusan Behera said. Diesel pump sets will be provided to the farmers for irrigation, Behera added.
