Egg hurling bid on VIPs inside UU; 2 detained
Bhubaneswar: In a shameful incident, egg hurling attempts were made at VIPs who visited Utkal University to participate in a seminar. According to sources, two persons have been detained following the bid. Notably, the VIPs visited the campus to participate in a two-day international seminar organised by Kalinga Lanka foundation.
The incident occurred when the VIPs were returning from the seminar. High Commissioner-designate of Sri Lanka in India Esala Weerakoon, Odisha Industries and School & Mass Education minister Debi Prasad Mishra, Tourism minster Ashok Chandra Panda and Kendrapara MP Baijayant Panda were among the dignitaries who participated in the inaugural session of the seminar today.
According to sources, the incident occurred when the dignitaries were returning from the seminar. “Without focusing on the development of the University which is a major issue, some political activities were going on inside the campus and egg hurling was in protest of such activities,” said a student
“We had approached the university authorities with our demands through a memorandum for the development of the institution and none of our demands have been met. Moreover, there are plans to withdraw the proposal of the campus wi-fi enabled and we hurled eggs protesting such callousness of the authorities,” said another student of the university.
Commenting on the matter, the vice chancellor of the university Ashok Das said “Some students were attempting to throw eggs on the vehicles of the dignitaries and they have been detained by police.”
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Satyabrata Bhoi said, “Two youths were detained by police on charge of creating disturbance during the minister’s visit. But no egg was hurled.”
The police official said a group of eight to ten students came in front of the minister’s vehicle and pelted objects when the vehicle slowed down, few meters away from the varsity gate.
