Bhubaneswar: The BJP on Monday claimed that the recent drought package announced by the Odisha government has fault and discrepancy.
Addressing a press briefing in the capital city, senior BJP leader Bijay Mohapatra said the farmer suicide toll in the state has taken alarming proportions.
“In one-and-half-month span about 36-40 farmers have committed suicide in Odisha. Notably, the rate of suicide has gone up only after the announcement of new drought package by the state government,” he observed.
Citing reasons of the rising incidence of suicide, he said there might be some faults and discrepancy in the drought package.
Referring to the callousness of the state government, the BJP leader said the former had not made any arrangement for contingency plan when the possibility of drought had loomed large in the state this year due to scanty rainfall.
“It was only after the visit of the Central team, the state government woke up from its deep slumber but sadly limited its action inside the State Secretariat,” he pointed out.
Addressing the chief minister, Mohapatra said “You are announcing the package, but the rate of famer suicide is going up further. Have you ever made any review on this?”
