Bolangir: The frequency in the farmer suicide in Odisha has reached alarming proportions with the death of another farmer of Balangir district on Monday.
According to reports, the deceased, identified as Basudev Bhoi of Ghusuramuda village of Budhipadar panchayat, had borrowed loan for cultivation of paddy in his land this year. But to his bad luck, he sustained heavy crop loss due to scanty rainfall. Unable to repay the loan, he was under severe mental stress.
Finding no other way, the hapless farmer consumed pesticides on Thursday last. He was rushed to the VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla by his family members in a critical condition. But the doctors at the hospital could not save his life as he died on Monday afternoon.
Following the news about the death of Bhoi, irate villagers of Ghusuramuda staged a road blockade on the National Highway in the evening demanding compensation to the family members.
