The deceased, identified as Bhajahari Madhei on Sunday went to his land to spray pesticide and returned home in the evening with ill health. On being informed that he consumed pesticide, the family members rushed him to Anandpur hospital where doctors declared him dead.
He was under severe stress as the family lent around Rs 1.5 lakh from local money lenders last year for his stomach operation. Around Rs 12,000 was also taken from the private money lenders with high interest this year for cultivation, his brother Raju Madhei said. Bajahari’s mental condition was not stable for last few days due to his crop damage which might force him to take the extreme step, Raju added.
It’s worthwhile to mention that farmer Basudev Bhoi of Ghusuramuda village of Budhipadar panchayat had also killed self in Balangir district yesterday.
The deceased had borrowed loans for cultivation of paddy this year. He suffered heavy crop loss due to scanty rainfall. Unable to recover the loans, he was under severe mental stress. Finding no other way, the hapless farmer consumed pesticides on Thursday.
