Sundergarh: The court of additional district and sessions judge on Saturday sentenced 17 persons to life imprisonment and acquitted one in connection with the murder of former Lanjiberna outpost in-charge ASI Naveen Patel, three years after the gruesome killing.
Notably, the heinous act took place on August 11, 2012 when Patel along with along with three other police officials went to Lanjiberna village to nab Baladev Majhi against whom an arrest warrant was issued.
Villagers of Lanjiberna and some relative of Majhi attacked the team and beat mercilessly. While three of the policemen managed to escape from the spot, Patel was beaten to death on the spot by the irate mob.
Later, the mob threw the body of Patel with the police jeep into a canal to brand the murder as an accident.
