Bhubaneswar: The State government has mulled setting up of 35 cold storages in 2015-16 and 112 stores in next three years.
It was decided in a review meeting on implementation of Potato Mission chaired by chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday. These cold storages will be a great help for the tubers to be produced this year.
Potato Mission has been implemented in the State from this fiscal to make the State self-sufficient in tuber production. Under this mission, the government has aimed at producing 11.25 lakh metric tonne by 2017-18 by cultivating 60,000 hectares land. Currently, the vegetable is being grown in 15,000 hectares.
The State requires 10 lakh metric tonne of potato while only 2.5 metric tonne is being produced. However, the demand can be met by 2017-18, government sources said.
