Bhubaneswar: Orissa State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) on Wednesday decided to issue closure notices to six sponge iron units for not complying with the stipulated pollution control norms, official sources said.

The six sponge iron units were found not installing mechanism for "Bag Filter" as recommended by the experts of IIT, Kharagpur, forest and environment minister Debi Prasad Mishra told reporters here.

"We will issue closure notice to six sponge iron units tomorrow," OSPCB member-secretary Siddhant Das said adding of the 109 sponge iron plants, 29 fully complied with the recommendations of IIT, Kharagpur towards upgradation of Bag Filter.

However, it was found that 69 such units had partly complied with the recommendations while six units did not pay any heed to it, he said.

Of the total 109 sponge iron units spread over nine districts, IIT, Kharagpur covered 104 units and made certain recommendations for improvement of pollution aspects.

While highest number of 47 sponge iron units were operating in Sundergarh district, 21 units are located in Keonjhar followed by 13 in Jharsuguda and 10 in Sambalpur.

The sponge iron plants which would face closure notice comprised three in Sundergarh district, two in Keonjhar district and one in Angul, Das said.
