Bhubaneswar: Optimistic on return of 59 Afghan students to Ravenshaw University in Cuttack, Orissa government on Thursday said it left the decision on the Afghan embassy, official sources said.

"We have already appealed to the Afghan students to return to the university campus. We have assured them fullproof security. Now it is upto the students and the embassy to take a decision," state Higher Education minister Debi Prasad Mishra told PTI over phone from New Delhi.

The Afghan students left Cuttack two days back after two of them were injured in a clash at the varsity campus on January 13.

Mishra who had been camping at New Delhi and holding talks with students, embassy and others said the state government was committed to the safety of foreign students in Cuttack and elsewhere in Orissa.

University Vice-Chancellor Devdas Chhotray submitted a report to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik giving details about the entire event, from the attack on the two Afghan students by local students, led by a ruling student union leader, upto their departure.
