Dhenkanal: One person was killed and another critically injured in two separate incidents of elephant attack near Hindol forest range in Dhenkanal district early this morning.

In the first incident, a man identified as Prasanna Behera of Tentulisingha village was trampled to death by a jumbo while he was out in the woods to answer nature's call.

Similarly, Suresh Chandra Pal, a resident of Kalinga village under Hindol range sustained critical injuries after he was attacked by a pachyderm. Pal was shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after his condition deteriorated.

A herd of elephants have been spotted at Buhalipala near Kalinga village triggering panic among the locals, reports added. On being informed, forest officials rushed to the spot and have since been tracking the movement of the herd to avoid further damage to lives and property.

"The officials are using siren to alert residents about presence of the elephants in the area," informed a villager.

Earlier on June 2, carcass of a pregnant elephant was found near Balua Sahi in Ichhapur under Sadar range in Dhenkanal district.
