Bhubaneswar: After the Geographical Indication (GI) tag was given to 'Banglar Rosogolla' last year, the Odisha government had said that it would continue its battle to get the GI tag for the iconic sweet. However, the matter seems to have been put on the back burner since.

As per reports, the GI Registry officials, in June, had asked the Odisha government to submit all the documents related to the matter. However, the State government is yet to submit the necessary data (historical evidence) to prove that the famous sweet originated in Odisha and is being served as offering in Sri Jagannath Temple in Puri since centuries.

Speaking on the issue, Odisha MSME minister Prafulla Samal said that the GI Registry officials in June gave us one month time to provide data on 14 different aspects, but the State government has sought time till August 21.

"After being asked by the GI authorities last month, we have sought time till August 21 to submit the required data. We hope to submit the documents by early August," said Samal.

Finance Minister Sashi Bhusan Behera on the other hand said, "The government has already submitted some documents. Had we not submitted, the matter would have been closed by now. We need to gather some more data to prove our stance and it will be submitted soon."
