Bhubaneswar: Odisha government has been ready to formulate a revised policy for the welfare of the persons with disabilities, women and child development minister Usha Devi said.

The minister made this announcement while inagurating a state level consultation meet on "State Policy on Persons with Disability" here. The meet will continue till tomorrow.

"As India has signed a ratification of United Nations Conventions for Rights of persons with disabilities (UNCRPD) 2006, the existing policy for welfare of disables needs to be replaced by a progressive policy," the minister said.

The state has identified about 10.21 lak persons with disablities and formulated a policy for the overall development, the minister said adding that a revised policy would further better their living.

The welfare of the disable persons have been possibly mostly due to enactment of important legislations like Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and full Participation Act, 1995, National Trust for Welfare of Persons with Autism, Mental Retardation & Multiple Disability Act, 1999, Rehabilitation Council of India Act, 1992, Mental Health Act, 1987, the minister said.
