Bhubaneswar: Despite southwest monsoon arriving early by almost two days than its scheduled date, Odisha has recorded 37 percent less rainfall.

Official sources said Odisha has received 80.4 mm rainfall during the monsoon period from June 1 till June 20 against the average normal rainfall of 127.2 mm during the same period.

“Odisha witnessed 20 percent more rainfall than normal between June 8 and 13. But as the southwest monsoon has weakened, the amount of rainfall declined in the following 10 to 12 days,” said Director of Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre, HR Biswas.

Biswas further informed that the southwest monsoon is likely to become active between June 23 and June 25 in Odisha as several conditions are now becoming favourable for its advancement.

Official sources said a cyclonic circulation has formed over west-central Bay of Bengal and several parts of Odisha will experience rainfall activity in the next 24 hours under its impact.

The rainfall activity will be mostly concentrated in Coastal, Northern and Southern parts of Odisha. However, the weather will mostly remain hot and dry in interior parts of the State in the next 48 hours.

The southwest monsoon has already covered 13 districts of the State and it is expected that it will advance and cover all districts by next week.
