Bhubaneswar: In an attempt to modernise the police, the state government has established a DNA profiling unit in the premises of State Forensic Laboratory here in Rasulgarh.

Chief minister Naveen Patnaik yesterday inaugurated the unit which is set up with an investment of Rs 6 crore, with a capacity to take an order of 120 DNA tests per month.

Inaugurating the modern lab, Patnaik said, “The laboratory is one of the best of its kind in the country. This will help a great deal in solving crimes and bringing criminal to justice.”

Director General of Police Sanjeev Marik, who was also present during the inaugural ceremony said, “With this scientific lab, this a great jump of Odisha towards scientific investigation. The facility will enhance the investigation methods in the state for cases like murders, rapes.”

“Earlier we came in the waiting list of examination of crimes related to DNA profiling, but with this facility we do not have to wait for our turn. We will be able to investigate crimes depending upon the gravity of the case.” said ADG of crime branch Bijay Kumar Sharma.
