Jajpur: With the arrest of four persons, police today claimed to have busted an inter-district gang of truck smugglers in Jajpur district.

Police seized a stolen truck, a four-wheeler used in the crime, sharp-edged weapons and cash from the arrested persons.

The gang used to steal trucks on national and state highways passing through Odisha districts and sell them to scrap dealers in the neighbouring states, police said.

The arrested have been identified as Babuli Jena (41) and Rahul Bari (32) of Rourkela, Trilochan Nayak (36) of Taranjia and Prabhat Khilar (25) of Sinduria village in Jajpur district, they said.

The gang was busted after a truck owner, Benudhar Mohanta of Karanjia in Mayurbhanj district, whose vehicle was stolen near Chandikhole on NH No-200 reported the matter to Chandikhole police on Tuesday night. The police managed to arrest the four accused after a chase, police said.

?On being informed, our police team rushed to the spot and arrested all of them after a long chase in Darpan forest in the early hours on Wednesday and brought them to the police station," Jajpur SP Deepak Kumar said.

The accused, during interrogation, have revealed that they had stolen at least six trucks from different locations in Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Keonjhar, Sundargarh and Angul districts, police said.

"It is an inter district truck theft gang and more members are involved in it. We have arrested four of its members only. We are on the look out for others and the rest will be arrested soon," he said.
