Bhubaneswar: International Women’s Day, a global event aimed at celebrating the achievements of women in various fields, was observed here with fervour and gaiety.

Among the many programmes organized to mark the occasion in the State capital was a human chain formed by students of Ramadevi Women’s College here. As many as five hundred students participated in the event, which began from Vani Vihar square and culminated at Rupali Square.

To create awareness among the people, the participants also held a rally holding placards that read ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padaho’ and raised slogans to save the girl child.

Besides, a mini marathon was taken out by Maternity Care Hospital in Sahid Nagar here to celebrate the day.

Like previous years, international sand artist Sudarsan Patnaik created a sand sculpture on ‘Women’s Day’ at Puri sea beach which attracted hundreds of tourists.

“This year, I have designed my art on AI 173, the world’s longest non-stop all-women flight, which flew from New Delhi to San Francisco. We must feel proud that the women are not far behind and like their male counterparts, they can achieve anything and everything,” Patnaik said.

To celebrate the day, sand artist Manas Nayak also created a sand sculpture on ‘Pledge for Parity’ at Puri sea beach.
