Bhubaneswar: Hours before Union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh’s visit to naxal-hit Malkangiri district, the police-Maoist fire exchange at Kalimela on Sunday afternoon that left three jawans injured, has forced the district administration to beef up security in the region.

Security has also been tightened keeping in view the week-long protest being observed by the Andhra-Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) from May 23 to 29.  Ramesh is scheduled to visit naxal-hotbed Janbai ghat region, from where the Maoists had abducted then Malkangiri collector R Vineel Krishna on 16 February 2011. Incidentally Krishna, now private secretary to Ramesh will accompany the minister during his tour which also includes Sukma district in neighbouring Chhastisgarh.

The minister is scheduled to attend few ground breaking events in the region and review the ongoing projects under MGNREGA, PMGSY and IAP.
