Bhubaneswar: Hailstorm would lash some parts of Odisha in the next 24 hours, said the local Met office in a release here this evening.

Talking to media persons, director, Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu said though there has been a steady rise in the day temperature in the last couple of days, the temperature will come down by 3-4 degrees as there is possibility of hailstorm in some parts of the state in the next four days.

“A north-south trough line has formed from north-west Madhya Pradesh to interior Karnataka and lying to the north-west of central Odisha. Model indicator shows that there is possibility of the movement of the trough line towards Odisha. Under its influence, there is possibility of hail storm at few places in the state between March 13 and 16. As per our prediction, there would be rain or thundershower in one or two places in interior Odisha in the next 24 hours. In the next 72 hours, there would be rainfall in south and north Odisha. But the rainfall would be comparatively more in north Odisha,” Sahu added.

He said the rainfall would occur mostly during the afternoon session with a wind speed of around 60 km per hour.

While temperature crossed over 40 degree Celsius in Hirakud (41.2) today while Balangir emerged as the second hottest place in the state with 40 degrees.

Though temperature hovered between 32 and 37 degrees in coastal areas, humidity level in these areas went up to an average of 80 percent making the life of the people miserable.

The capital city recorded 37.8 degrees with a maximum humidity of 86 percent, the release added.
