Rourkela: Cracker explosion left four minors injured, one of them seriously, while they tried to explode a cracker on their way to school on Thursday.

As per reports, an unidentified person instigated the four students to burn an unexploded cracker while they were on their way to Hirakhand Primary School in Hirakud. After several attempts, the cracker exploded and left the students with severe burn injuries.

One of them identified as Rajkumar Sahu of class IV sustained grievous injuries on face and eyes.

“A stranger asked us to see whether the cracker was exploding or not. We then got engaged in bursting the cracker and eventually sustained injuries under the impact of the explosion,” injured student Udit Kumar said.

“The kids said that a ‘baba’ asked them to fire the crackers as a result of which they got injured,” parent of an injured student Sarat Mohapatra said.

Meanwhile, the injured are undergoing treatment at a private nursing home in Hirakud.

“The children have sustained 15 to 25 per cent burn injuries. One of the kids has sustained injury in his eye. Opthalmologist will be attending him soon. However, the condition of the students are stable,” attending doctor Rabindra Pradhan said.

The medical expenses are being taken care of by the district administration from the Red Cross fund, the district collector informed.

“On behalf of the district administration, the district Red Cross division will bear all the expenses towards treatment. We will make further arrangements in case any assistance is needed,” Sub Collector Bibhuti Bhusan Behera said.
