Bhubaneswar: The special squad of Berhampur Police detained former Congress MLA from Sanakhemundi Ramesh Jena and two of his associates from an apartment in Khanadagiri area here during the wee hours of Sunday for their involvement in number of criminal activities.

According to sources, the special squad of Berhampur police, with the help of Commissionerate Police, raided the apartment and detained the trio. Police also seized three mobile phones and weapons from their possession.

Berhampur police was in search of Prem Panda aka Bapi, who had hurled bombs at the residence of Ranjit Nayak. Acting on a tip off about Bapi’s visit to Bhubaneswar with the former MLA, the police raided the apartment, said a police official.

The police have taken the trio to Berhampur for further interrogation, he added.

Notably, a number of criminal cases are pending against the former MLA. On February 11 in 2011, when Ramesh was residing in Bhubaneswar, police had raided his residence. During the raid, there was a a gunfight between his aides and police.
