Doctor mowed down by bus in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: A doctor, practising as a medicine specialist in Angul was today crushed to death by a private bus near the Chandrashekharpur petrol pump here. As per reports, the deceased identified as Basant Rout, was walking towards Jayadev Vihar around 8. 30 am when the speeding bus knocked him down and ran over him.

The incident sparked off tension in the area as passers by and onlookers gathered in large numbers and started damaging the vehicle. Sensing danger, the river and helper of the vehicle fled from the spot.

“We heard a loud sound but could not make out what had happened. Suddenly people started gathering and pointing towards the bus. Some men asked all the passengers to get off the vehicle. Later they started damaging the glass windows,” Sudhanshu Jena, a passenger recounted.

After getting the information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body. “The deceased died on spot. We have sent the body to the capital hospital for autopsy. We have informed the family members of the deceased and they will be arriving here shortly,” informed a senior police official. Vehicles on both sides of the road were left stranded for over an hour following the incident.
