Keonjhar: Four persons were killed and one other sustained critical injuries after a car in which they were travelling rammed into a roadside tree at Maidankel under Sadar police station in Keonjhar district late Monday night.

The deceased have been identified as Principal of Government College of Engineering Kalpatru Tirthabasi Parida, Vice-Principal of Gayatri College Chaitanyabikash Sahoo and Prasant Kumar Patra and Rakesh Kumar Guru of Cuttack.

Injured Kamalakshya Parida, who was identified as the son of Kalpatru Parida, was rushed to the Keonjhar District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in a critical condition, sources said.

According to reports, the mishap occurred at around 2 am last night while the five were returning after attending a ‘Satsang’ at Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj district.

On being informed, Sadar police officials along with fire personnel rushed to the spot and admitted Kamalakshya to the DHH.

“Kamalakshya was driving the car and has sustained multiples fractures in the incident,” said a relative of one of the deceased, Benudhar Muduli.

“While the five were returning from Rairangpur, the driver of the car lost control over the vehicle and hit a roadside tree. The injured was rescued by fire brigade officials and rushed to the DHH where he is undergoing treatment now,” informed Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) of Sadar Police Station, Sriharsh Mishra.
