Bhubaneswar: CPI(M) supporters staged a demonstration near Odisha assembly building here on Thursday demanding among other things a permanent solution to jumbo menace in Nilagiri area of Balasore district and compensation for crop damage caused by elephant attacks.

The slogan shouting demonstrators also demanded steps to declare entire Nilagiri as drought-affected, patta for forest land and withdrawal of the decision for stone quarry auction in the area.

The protesters pointed out that a large number of elephants from outside the state have been unleashing terror in Nilagiri since 2010, causing extensive damage to standing crops, houses and household articles.

The state government should take immediate steps for making a permanent arrangement to prevent entry of elephants into the region from outside, they said.

Claiming that no agricultural activities could be carried out in Nilagiri last year due to inadequate rainfall, they said the government has declared a few villages as drought-hit. They demanded that the entire Nilagiri region must be declared drought affected.
