Berhampur: A water treatment plant of 20 million litre per day (mld) capacity was inaugurated by state Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday at Dakhinapur reservoir in the outskirts of this commercial town.

With the inauguration of the water treatment plant, Dakhinapur reservoir will now supply about 30 mld drinking water to the town, official sources said.

The treatment plant was installed at an investment of around Rs 7.28 crore under the urban infrastructure development scheme for the small and medium towns (UIDSSMT), the sources said.

Patnaik also laid the foundation stone for Rs 59.09 crore projects for laying 208 km-long pipe line and replacement of under-sized pipe for improvement of distribution system of water in the town.

He laid the foundation stones for three overhead tanks to be set up at Ankuli, Lanjipalli and Khodasingi areas of the town, which requires about 50 mld of water for its 3.7 lakh residents.

While Dakhinapur reservoir will supply 30 mld, Rushikulya joint water supply project at Badamadhapur provides 16 mld every day. Another 4 mld demand was being met from wells, sources said.
