Bhubaneswar: With an aim to develop the handloom and handicraft sectors and give a better lifestyle to weavers and artisans, chief minister Naveen Patnaik has directed the concerned officials to prepare the ‘Handloom and Handicrafts Policy’ within a month’s time.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting held at the secretariat here yesterday while reviewing the performance of Handloom, Handicrafts and Textile departments.

Besides, Patnaik also advised to prepare ‘special packages’ for the weavers and artisans working in these sectors and make a provision of giving old-age pension to weavers above 60 years of age.

The State government has already provided around 65,000 solar lanterns so far to weavers and artisans working in this sector.

Meanwhile, it is reported that Boyanika has already sold products worth Rs 5 crore through e-commerce and seeks to increase the sale in the coming days.

Handlooms, Textile & Handicrafts minister Snehangini Chhuria, the chief secretary and the development commissioner, among others, were present at the meeting.
