Sorcerer’s attempt to bring back dead to life lands him in custody

Baripada: Superstitions have gone so deep into the mindset of people in villages that they don’t even spare a dead man to rest in peace and believe he can be brought back to life. One such incident has come to fore from Marangatandi village under Chandua police limits in Mayurbhanj district where a dead man was taken to a person practising witchcraft (sorcerer) to bring him back to life.

According to sources, former Sarpanch of the village Rajaram Murmu breathed his last at a hospital on Friday. Instead of performing his last rites, the family members took the body to one Sarada Tudu who they thought would infuse life into him again!

Though the body was detained for over 19 hours, Tudu failed in his attempts.

During the incident, villagers gathered around his house to pay last respects to the departed soul. However, tension erupted after the family denied the villagers’ entry into the house following which police rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.

“Our Sarpanch was suffering from diabetes. He was admitted to hospital on February 22 and died last night at around 9.20 pm. We all waited outside his house but his family members did not allow us to see the body,” a local alleged.

Meanwhile, police have arrested the sorcerer from his house. “The sorcerer thought that he could save the dead. Getting information, our staff rushed to the spot. A case has been registered against Tudu. He will be court forwarded tomorrow,” said Gopal Chandra Karna, IIC Chandua PS.

“Even I cannot guarantee that I can save a life, but his family insisted me to try and bring back his life. Therefore I proceeded thinking that in case the Goddess bestows her blessings, we can save him,” said Tudu.
