Police-lawyers bicker over helmet fine issue
Rourkela: The lawyers and police in this steel city confronted each other leading to a road blockade over use of helmets by two-wheeler riders.
The matter was, however, resolved with intervention of Rourkela SP Anirudha Singh, who met the striking lawyers.
The incident took place when the traffic personnel caught two lawyers without helmet and imposed penalty of Rs 300 each for violation of the trraffic norms.
It was around 11 AM when the police were holding its regular helmet check of the vehicle near the judicial court.
Senior advocate Giridhari Pradhan was found not wearing helmet and was fined by the traffic sub-inspector, a lady who was manning it for Rs. 300.
Similarly, another lady lawyer s key was taken away by a constable as she was stopped for not wearing a helmet.
Pradhan argued that as per motor vehicle act a fine of Rs. 100 is imposed for first offence but the cops instead demanded Rs 300 from him.
Soon a group of lawyers gathered in front of the SP office and wanted to meet the officer.
They blocked the road but it was lifted at the intervention of the SP.
