Mahanadi row: BJD performs ‘Maha Aarti’ in Sambalpur

Bhubaneswar: With Mahanadi appearing to be the top agenda for major political parties ahead of 2019 general elections, a ‘Maha-Arati’ was conducted on the Mahanadi river bank in Sambalpur today by the ruling-BJD as part of its ongoing ‘Mahanadi Surakshya Abhiyan.’

Party heavyweights Prasanna Acharya, Raseswari Panigrahi, Sanjay Dasburma and others were present on the special event organised on the Mahanadi river bank at Marwadipada on the second day of ‘Mahanadi Surakshya Abhiyan.’

The Mahanadi Surakshya Abhiyan was launched on both sides of the river from Lakhanpur in Jharsuguda district and Ambavona in Bargarh district yesterday.

BJD leaders informed that the campaign will pass through different constituencies along the course of the river and culminate at Paradip on May 30.

“Chhattisgarh government is illegally constructing barrages for which Mahanadi River is drying up. This has affected irrigation and fishermen have been robbed of their livelihood,” said BJD vice president, Debi Prasad Mishra.

Mishra further stated that the ‘Maha Aarti’ was performed so that Chhattisgarh realises its fault of stopping the water of Mahanadi.

“We are demanding immediate opening of the Kalma barrage gates and maintaining previous water level till the matter is resolved by the Tribunal,” he added.
