Illegal mining: NGT seeks ATR on Utkal Alumina

Cuttack: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has asked the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF), Odisha, to submit an action taken report (ATR) on the mining activities of the Utkal Alumina International in Baflimali mines area in Kalahandi and Rayagada districts by October 20.

Apart from the PCCF, the Tribunal has also issued notices to the State and Union Environment and Forest secretaries, Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), Rayagada Collector and Utkal Alumina to keep their side in the case.

The Tribunal issued notice after hearing a petition filed by social activists Sambit Kumar Turuk and Prafulla Samantray.

The petitioners have alleged that the Utkal Alumina is currently lifting bauxite ore from 1388 hectares of land it had got on lease from the government of which 233 hectares comes under ‘forest land’ category which needs environment clearance.

The petitioners had urged the Tribunal for an urgent intervention in the matter and take necessary action against Utkal Alumina for its illegal mining activities in these forest land.
