Bhubaneswar: The local Met office has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in some parts in interior Odisha in the next 48 hours under the influence of a low pressure over Bay of Bengal.

“The low pressure formed over the north Bay of Bengal and its adjoining areas yesterday has centered over north-west Bay of Bengal between north Odisha and West Bengal today. Besides, there is a stretch of a monsoon trough line from Anupgarh to north-west Bay of Bengal through Daltanganj and Digha through the centre of the low pressure point. Besides, a cyclonic circulation has also formed at a height of 5.8 km from the mean sea level. Under its influence, there will be widespread rainfall in Odisha with extremely heavy rainfall at one or two places in interior parts of the state in the next 48 hours,” Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu, Director, Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar told OTV today.

He also said the local fishermen have been asked not to venture into the sea as the wind speed will be around 35-45 kmph with the possibility of tidal waves surging to a height of 3-4 metres in the coastal pockets.

Talking about the volume of rainfall in the state, Sahu said the overall deficit rainfall in Odisha, which was 21 percent in July has come down to 18 percent today due to widespread rainfall. “The deficit rainfall noticed in 18 districts till July-end has now come down to 12 districts,” he added.

He further said that the rainfall activity in the state will continue till August 6 due to low wind speed in the upper atmosphere.
