Bhubaneswar: A day after giving controversial remarks on Speaker Niranjan Pujari’s style of handling the House proceedings, senior BJD leader and Cooperation and Excise minister Damodar Rout today sought to clarify that his intentions were positive and his comments were not against the Speaker.
“I just raised a point that why disciplinary action is not taken against the legislators who are showing disrespect to the Speaker and creating noise in the House,” Rout said. “Though enough power is vested in the hands of the Speaker, why is he acting as a mute spectator and tolerating all the undisciplined activities?” he asked.
Hitting out at Opposition leader Narasingha Mishra, the minister said his statement is being politicised by the Opposition.
In reaction, Mishra said, “We came to know about his statement from the media and used it as a weapon to attack the ruling party. Rout should analyse the statement he had given.”
Meanwhile, Rout’s party colleague and Cuttack-Barabati MLA Debasis Samantray denounced the minister’s remarks about Pujari. “The Speaker is running the House in proper manner. Who is Damodar Rout to comment on the Speaker’s style of running the Assembly?” Samantray asked.
On the other hand, bedlam continued in the Assembly for the 11 consecutive day today. The Speaker has adjourned the House till 3 pm.
