Couple sells child to buy jewellery


Bhadrak: In a bizarre incident, a couple was arrested for selling its one-year-old son to purchase stationery items like saree, jewellery and mobile at Astal village in Bhadrak district here on Monday.

Acting on a tip off, officials of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) raided the place and arrested the couple. Later they took them to the town police station where after preliminary interrogation, the intoxicated duo identified as Pandya Mukhi and Barsha Mukhi confessed of having sold their son. Since their statements continued to vary, the CWC officials later took them into custody.

A panel of the CWC is likely to meet today and interrogate the couple after which detailed finding reports will be given to the police.

“The duo revealed that they have sold their child for Rs 25,000. But, both blame each other for such incident. Action will be taken as per law,” Sanjukta Mallick, Childline official said.

Meanwhile, Pandya Mukhi, the father of the child, revealed that unable to feed their two sons and a daughter, they sold the child to their brother-in-law and brought a mobile, saree and silver anklet.
