Bhubaneswar: The Catholic Church in Odisha today condemned the killing of five persons during the anti-Maoist operation in Kandhamal as it sought justice for the victims’ families.
“On behalf of Catholic Church in Odisha, I condemn the killing of five innocents in Kandhamal district,” Archbishop John Barwa SVD, Archbishop of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar said in a statement.
“I also express our deep empathy to the family members of the five civilians killed in Kandhamal district on July 8 by security personnel. The killing was unfortunate and uncalled for,” he said.
Five villagers, including a two-year-old girl Gracy Digal, were killed on the spot and five others injured in the firing, the Arch Bishop said and urged the government to provide justice to the victims and compensation to their families.
